Feds crackdown on unpaid child support

Posted on January 31st, 2012 No Comments

A new federal program, called “Project Save Our Children,” has been created to crackdown on parents who owe or refuse to pay child support. The program targets any individual who owes more than $5,000 in child support payments.

Child support payments that exceed $5,000 becomes a felony. Authorities are stepping up their tracking of parents who have not made payments by listing their names on a newly created website.

One father tops the list for owing more than $1 million in child support. First baseman for the Oakland A’s, Troy Lee Neel, was arrested under the “Project Save Our Children” program for owing $778,000.

Divorce could cost Kobe Bryant $75 million

Posted on January 17th, 2012 No Comments

NBA star Kobe Bryant and his wife of more than ten years, Vanessa, filed for divorce in December and it could cost the basketball player nearly half of his fortune.

After the couple was married in 2001, Vanessa’s mother told newspapers that they never signed a prenuptial agreement. Since the two were legally married in the state of California, his soon-to-be ex-wife is entitled to half of their community property (ie Kobe’s $150 million) and also entitles her to maintain her standard of living since their ten year marriage is considered a “lengthy marriage.”

Vanessa is also expected to receive continuous child support payments, spousal support payments, and possibly part of Kobe’s retirement money. Both have agreed to share custody of their two children.

Divorcing same-sex couple fights over child custody

Posted on January 10th, 2012 No Comments

In a rare child custody case, two former wives are fighting for full custody of their child. One woman donated her egg and had it implanted into her then-partner in 2004.

Now that the couple has been divorced since 2006, the spouses are in court fighting for full custody of their daughter. The woman who donated her egg claims she is the rightful mother, since she is biological mother. However, the woman who carried the child and gave birth to her claims she is better qualified.

A Florida judge originally made the tough decision to give the birth mother custody, but a state appeals court overturned the decision stating that the parents should share parental rights.

According to Russell Brand, him and his soon-to-be ex-wife, pop star Katy Perry, never signed a prenuptial agreement when they got married last year.

Actor/comedian Brand, 36, filed for divorce in Los Angeles from his wife Katy Perry, 27, just after Christmas. He cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for their divorce. The two had a private ceremony in India and are legally married in California. According to California state law, spouses with no prenuptial agreements must split their assets 50/50.

Brand could end up walking away with more than $20 million, as Perry is estimated to be worth around $44 million. Brand is estimated to be worth near $15 million.
