Dennis Quaid’s wife files for divorce in Austin

Posted on March 14th, 2012 No Comments

Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, actor Dennis Quaid’s third wife, filed for divorce earlier this month in Austin after seven years of marriage. According to the divorce petition, the conflict of personalities has prevented any hope of reconciliation.

Buffington-Quaid, an Austin real estate agent, is seeking spousal support and attorney fees. A temporary custody order filed earlier this month states that both parents will have access to their twins and that neither parent can remove the children from school or the state without consent.

The couple has two children, twins, born in 2007. They made national headlines as newborns after they almost died when a nurse accidentally administered an overdose of a blood thinner.

First same-sex couple married in CA files for divorce

Posted on February 14th, 2012 No Comments

The first same-sex couple married in the state of California when Proposition 8 was approved in 2008 has decided to end their marriage and file for divorce.

Robin Tyler, 69, and her now ex-wife, Diane Olson, 58, had been together for nearly twenty years before they were able to tie the knot. Tyler and Olson rose to national attention in 2004 after they sued the state for banning same-sex marriage. After Proposition 8 briefly passed in 2008, the couple were the first to marry.

Tyler and Olson’s attorney does not believe their divorce will have a negative affect on the same-sex marriage cause.

Divorce rates decreasing nationwide

Posted on February 9th, 2012 No Comments

According to new data by the Census Bureau, divorce rates are decreasing. From 1996, the United States has seen a five percent drop in divorce.

One reason for the decrease, the bureau’s researchers believe, could be that it is expensive. Since the recession, areas with high unemployment have seen fewer spouses getting divorced.

The data also shows that men are getting divorced at older ages than women, with the majority of recently divorced men between the ages of 35 and 54 compared to women who were between 25 and 44. The most common reasons for divorce, in order, are infidelity, abuse, financial issues, and sexual incompatibility.

Mathew and Tina Knowles announced this week that they have ended their 31 year marriage. In late 2009, Tina filed for divorce after discovering her husband had had an affair and fathered a child. Both failed to show up to court and the divorce petition was dropped.

Divorce papers were filed once again in late August this year. According to the divorce documents, the 57 year-old Tina states that there would be no hope for reconciliation due to their conflicting personalities.

The Houston-based couple, who were married in 1980, have had active roles in their daughter’s music career. Mathew, 60, was Beyonce’s manager until earlier this year and Tina founded a fashion line with Beyonce called House of Dereon.

Divorcing spouses ordered to trade passwords

Posted on November 22nd, 2011 No Comments

A divorcing Connecticut couple has been ordered by a judge to trade social media passwords to one anothers lawyers.

The husband says he filed for divorce after finding incriminating emails his wife sent from their computer they share. Only the lawyers are allowed to search the social media and dating website profiles to look for evidence of infidelity their client could use in the proceedings. Both parties are forbidden to have access to each other’s passwords, change their passwords, delete messages, or impersonate one another.

The husband’s lawyer asked for the swap after discovering his client’s wife had texted a friend to change her password and delete certain messages from her Facebook.

Experts purpose one year waiting period for divorce

Posted on October 26th, 2011 No Comments

Experts in family social sciences have proposed a radical form of legislation that would require a one year waiting period for couples filing for divorce. They call it the Second Chance Act, which would require educational classes on reconciliation in addition to the waiting period.

Research conducted by the experts included polling 2,500 couples far along in the process of divorce. 10% of couples were interested in reconciling and in 30%  of cases at least one spouse wanted to reconcile.

The experts also cite Western Europe as an example. In most western European countries, three year waiting periods are the norm. The writers of the Second Chance Act are focused mainly on the aspect of children’s well-being, as studies show that children of divorced parents have a higher risk of juvenile delinquency, behavioral problems, and mental illness.

Divorce rates increase for Baby Boom generation

Posted on October 19th, 2011 No Comments

According to a new study from The National Center for Family & Marriage Research, divorce rates are increasing in older generations. In fact, in the past thirty years, divorce rates for couples born in the Baby Boom generation (1946-1964) has doubled.

While nearly half of divorces these days end in divorce, one in four divorces are between couples 50 years or older. Experts believe divorce rates are increasing for older couples because of changing societal views on divorce. No longer considered taboo or necessarily negative, more couples who are not happy are not as pressured to stay together as they once were.

Many couples are also believed to say together for their young children, but once the children are grown and moved out, some decide to end their marriage.
