Southerns most likely to remarry

Posted on September 13th, 2011 No Comments

According to the American Community Survey, Texans and other residents of southern states are more likely to remarry after a divorce than people living anywhere else in the country. The statistics don’t surprise many sociologists, since the South has the highest divorce rate. Some say that a cultural marriage expectations are a major factor that influence divorce and marriage rates.

Since couples in the Northeast generally wait longer to marry, and therefore see lower divorce rates, experts say couples do not experience as much pressure to get married as couples in the South do. The lower divorce rates also contributes to the South’s higher remarriage rates. Fortunately, studies show that second marriages appear to last longer than first marriages.

Citizens protest domestic parternship benefits

Posted on September 9th, 2011 No Comments

San Antonio citizens protested out side of city hall last week after the city agreed to extend the benefits of domestic partners that work for the City of San Antonio. The benefits are one tenth of 1% of the cities budget, but members of the local “Voices of Marriage” advocacy group think that’s too much.

Armed with posters and signs, members of the group say that providing monetary benefits to domestic partners goes against state law and their religious beliefs. Extending benefits to same-sex partners working for the city would cost an estimated $300,00 to $400,000 a year out of San Antonio’s $2.2 billion budget.

South and West have highest divorce rates

Posted on August 30th, 2011 No Comments

The US Census Bureau states in a new report that the South and West have the highest divorce rates in the country. However, these regions also have the highest rate of marriages as well. In these areas of the United States, about 19 in 1,000 people are married and 10 per 1,0000 get divorced.

The reason for the high rates of divorce in the South and West is believe to be because people in the area get married younger and tend to have less education than those living in the Northeast. It is more common for people living in the Northeast to wait longer to get married, which lowers the chances of getting a divorce.

Divorce: Reform and affects on children

Posted on August 23rd, 2011 No Comments

Advocates for divorce reform argue that stricter and more difficult ways for couples to get divorced could help the national budget and the children of divorce from issues further in life.

Studies show that children in a single-parent household can cost the government $20,000-$30,000 a year, or $33 billion to $112 billion a year in “divorce-related social-service subsidies and lost revenue.” In 2008, the Census Bureau found that divorce rates were as high as 8.2 per 1,000 people. Polling over the past 30 years show that Americans believe divorce should be more difficult to obtain than easier.

The affects on children are much more severe. Studies show that children of divorce are less likely to make higher sums of money and die 5 years younger than children from non-divorced families. Research from Penn State also show that there would be 70,000 fewer suicides a year, 500,000 fewer acts of child delinquency, 600,000 fewer children in therapy, 1.2 million fewer school suspensions, and 750,000 fewer children forced to repeat grades.

Alabama police trick parents wanted for child support

Posted on August 12th, 2011 No Comments

Alabama’s Lee County Sheriff’s Office created a rouse to lure individuals with warrants out for their arrest for unpaid child support to a specific location to arrest them. The department contacted over 140 wanted parents with letters saying they had won tickets to the Iron Bowl (the Alabama vs Auburn game). All they needed was a form of ID to pick up the free tickets.

About a dozen people fell for the trick, about 10%, owing a combined total of $270,000 in unpaid child support. The wanted individuals were welcomed with balloons and clapping employees, congratulating them on winning the tickets. But moments later when they showed the disguised officer their ID, they were arrested.

Divorce rates lower in states that allow same-sex marriage

Posted on August 3rd, 2011 No Comments

According to studies done by the Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control’s National Vital Statistics System, half of the states with the lowest divorce rates allow same-sex marriage. Other experts have found that, after studying divorce rates over a five-year period, there is a distinct correlation between divorce rates and same-sex marriage laws.

There are other factors that affect divorce rates, however. Research done at the Pew Research Center and the University of Florida show that higher education and marriage age factor into divorce rates. Attaining higher level education degrees usually leads to marrying at an older age, which studies show leads to a lower chance of divorce.

Single father households have increased in recent years

Posted on July 27th, 2011 No Comments

In recent years, more and more fathers have been gaining full custody of their children, thereby increasing the number of single father households in the country.

In Texas, it has been estimated that 6 out of every 100 households are headed by single fathers. This is almost a 14 percent increase from 2000. Other states, like Maryland, Wisconsin, California, and Michigan also show a significant increase in single father households.

This rise in fathers gaining full custody of their children has largely been attributed to increased career opportunities for women and a cultural trend for fathers becoming more involved in their children’s lives. Also, old court room adages, such as the “tender years presumption,” which claimed that mothers are better at caring for young children, have been thrown out. Fathers now stand a much better chance of winning full custody of their children than they did in previous decades.

Dating violence is prevalent among teens today

Posted on July 21st, 2011 No Comments

Domestic violence can occur in many forms, and, often, domestic violence does not just involve adults. Today, teenagers across the country are involved in intimate relationships, even living with their boyfriend or girlfriend at a young age, and some of them are being abused.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the most vulnerable group to domestic violence are women who are ages 16-24. Other reports have shown that parents do not talk to their children about teen dating violence because they do not think that it will happen to them, even though the rate of teen dating violence is nearly triple that of the rate of domestic violence among adults.

When in a relationship, there are signs to look for to know that a partner is abusive. One sign is if the partner checks their boyfriend or girlfriend’s cell phone or email without permission. An explosive temper and an attempt to isolate their partner from their family or friends are also tell-tale signs of abuse.

If you or someone you love is being physically or emotionally abused by a loved one, please contact the Houston domestic violence lawyers of Garg & Associates, P.C., at 800-242-2151.

Rate of military divorce in 2010 stayed the same

Posted on July 13th, 2011 No Comments

The rate of divorce in the military plateaued in 2010, which is good news for those in the military because it means that the rate is no longer steadily rising as it had been since 2001.

The main cause for divorce in the military is that the partners of those in the military have high expectations when their partner comes home that her or she often has difficulty living up to. This strain on the relationship often leads military marriages to end in divorce.

Programs have been created to help military couples stay together by offering support and counseling. One study found that military couples who attend marriage support programs specifically designed for those in the military have a 33 percent lower chance of divorce than those who do not attend such programs.

University of Iowa research shows correlation between teen sex and divorce

Posted on July 6th, 2011 No Comments

Researchers at the University of Iowa recently released a study that showed a correlative linkĀ  between teen sex and the rate of divorce among women.

According to the research, which consisted of surveys given to more than 3,000 women who had been married at least once, 31 percent of women who had sex for the first time during their adolescence were divorced within five years of getting married. 47 percent of these women were divorced from their husbands within ten years.

Women who had sex before the age of 16 or who had unwanted sex during adolescence were twice as likely to divorce from their partner at some point. Dr. Anthony Paik, who conducted this research, stated that other variables were controlled for during the study and that teen sex showed to be a factor in divorce.
