Do mediators receive any specialized training to qualify?
Mediators must attend forty hours of training in the alternate dispute resolution process in a program approved by the court. To act in cases involving the parent-child relationship, such as a custody case, there is also an additional twenty-four hours of specialized course work required. The court has the discretion to appoint a mediator who has not completed these courses if that person has substantial legal training and experience in alternate dispute resolution.
