How long will child support have to be paid?

Usually child support must be paid until the child reaches the age of eighteen.  However, if the child reaches that age and is still in high school, support must be paid until the child graduates.  Other occurrences that will terminate the child support obligation prior to that time are the death of the child, the marriage of the child or if the child enlists in the armed forces.  If the child is emancipated, that is, a court removes the disability of minority for general purposes; this will also terminate the child support obligation.  The court may order that the support obligation remains an obligation of the deceased parent’s estate and if the deceased was the beneficiary of a trust, the court may order the trust to pay support.  Recent amendments to the Texas Family Code provide that the court can require the obligor to obtain a life insurance policy payable to the oblige and for the benefit of the child.
