If the court grants an Ex Parte Application for A Protective Order, how long is it in effect?

The ex parte order is valid for up to twenty days and it can be extended for additional twenty day periods.  To grant the Ex Parte Application, the court must find that there is a clear and present danger of family violence.  Before the Ex Parte Order expires, a hearing is usually held to determine if the order should be extended and made permanent.  If the court grants the Application, the order is valid for two years and may be extended if necessary.
