What is a temporary restraining order and what purpose does it serve?
A temporary restraining order or TRO as it is called is designed simply to preserve the status quo until the court has an opportunity to hold a hearing on temporary orders. It is a very flexible tool and can be crafted to prevent a party from leaving the state with the children before a temporary hearing. It can freeze assets and forbid the sale or disposition of community assets without a court order. The TRO is valid for fourteen days and can be extended for an additional fourteen days. At the end of that time, the court will usually hold a hearing on temporary orders and address the issues raised by the TRO.
